2023 Philadelphia Spatial Biology Roadshow

Spatial Biology Roadshow
The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19103Link

NanoString Technologies is returning to take over The Academy of Natural Sciences! We invite you to an afternoon filled with presentations and discussions all about the future of spatial biology. Join us at our free event and network with spatial biology experts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.

Highlights from our speakers:

  • Joseph Beechem, PhD, from NanoString Technologies will discuss the future of spatial omics applications and NanoString Technologies’ latest innovations.
  • Charlly Kao, PhD, will share research on the CLEC16A locus in the human genome that has been strongly associated with a wide variety of autoimmune diseases and the use of spatial profiling to better understand the underlying etiology and driver pathways.
  • Alli Wakefield will highlight Leica Biosystems as your partner in designing optimized, standardized, and automated histopathology workflows in spatial and translational research.
  • Robert Yamulla, PhD, from Illumina will highlight how spatial sequencing is revolutionizing cancer research.
  • Donald J. Nelson, PhD, from Azenta Life Sciences will present a case study of spatial profiling of a tissue microarray containing 60 urothelial carcinoma specimens using the GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler.

Guest speakers will share their results and discoveries obtained using GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler and CosMx Spatial Molecular Imager. The event will conclude with a networking reception in the Dinosaur Hall.

Speakers

Joseph Beechem, PhD

Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President of Research and Development, NanoString

Joseph M. Beechem, PhD, has served as the chief scientific officer and senior vice president of Research and Development at NanoString Technologies since April 2012. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, averaging more than four citations each day, in diverse fields such as cancer immunology, infectious disease, imaging, biomathematics, physics, chemistry, spectroscopy, and diagnostics. In addition, Joseph Beechem is named on nearly 50 US patents or patent applications and has served on several editorial and scientific advisory boards. Joseph Beechem received a BS in Chemistry and Biology from Northern Kentucky University and a PhD in Biophysics from Johns Hopkins University.

Charlly Kao, PhD

Senior Translational Scientist, Center for Applied Genomics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Charlly Kao, PhD, studied immunology at the University of Minnesota for his PhD and then did his post-doctoral work focusing on T cell adaptive responses to viral infections at the Wistar Institute and University of Pennsylvania. Afterwards, he began work at the Center for Applied Genomics (CAG) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as a staff scientist to manage translational projects and evaluating new omics technologies. He is also one of the co-founders of two biotech start-ups, NeuroFix Therapeutics and Arctic Therapeutics, that is/was commercializing/translating new technologies and therapies discovered by the CAG.

Alli Wakefield

Life Science Sales Specialist, Leica Biosystems

Alli Wakefield obtained her BS in Biology from Purdue University and has over seven years of sales experience in the life science field. In her current role, Alli is a life science sales specialist at Leica Biosystems, focused on helping customers with their digital pathology and advanced staining workflows. She covers the Mid-Atlantic region from Pennsylvania to South Carolina.

Circular portrait of Robert Yamulla

Robert Yamulla, PhD

Senior Marketing Manager, AMR Cancer Research, Illumina

Robert Yamulla, PhD, leads Illumina’s cancer research marketing strategy for North and South America. He is a cancer biologist specializing in next-generation sequencing, CRISPR/Cas9, and in vitro disease modeling. Robert received his PhD from Cornell University. His most recent research focused on identifying fundamental initiation mechanisms and causative factors for ovarian carcinoma. He has also developed mechanistic models of colon cancer progression as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute research fellow and studied rare genetic diseases with the Clinic for Special Children in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Donald J. Nelsen, PhD

Technical Applications Scientist, Next Generation Sequencing, Azenta Life Sciences

Donald J. Nelsen, PhD, is a Technical Applications Scientist for the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) team at Azenta Life Sciences.
